Presentations for Teachers

I have presented two different workshops for teachers in the Washington, DC metropolitan area:

“Crash Course for Sibelius®”:
A session that lasts between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours, which emphasizes creating and engraving music using the Sibelius® software program.  This workshop teaches teachers about the most important functions of the program; gives them opportunities to experience and experiment with the software in a structured way; and focuses largely on how, why, and in what ways teachers might choose to use Sibelius® in their own day-to-day instruction.  I have presented this workshop three times between 2009 and the present, for “Great Beginnings” classes for teachers new to Fairfax County Public Schools.

“Neat SMART Board® Tips and Tricks for the Music Classroom”:
A session that lasts about 1 hour, which emphasizes the various techniques that music teachers can use in conjunction with the SMART Board® and SMART Notebook® software to enhance their instruction.  Students in classrooms with interactive whiteboards only benefit from them if they are used in creative, logical, engaging ways, which need not take hours to create.  In this session, teachers learn about my favorite SMART® tools, and have the opportunity to experience how instructing using these tools and techniques might play out in the classroom environment.  Attendees will also be able to leave the workshop with the files I use in the presentation, and are encouraged to reuse materials they like from the presentation (with appropriate attribution).  I have presented this workshop four times between 2009 and the present, for “Great Beginnings” classes for teachers new to Fairfax County Public Schools, and at the SUCCESS Mid-Atlantic SMART Board® Users Conference in Arlington, VA.

I have also given a presentation to the combined faculty of Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School titled “Using Music to Teach Across the Curriculum,” which explains in detail how even teachers with little musical training or confidence can use music in classroom core instruction to enhance student engagement and understanding.
