Program Notes:
This, my first attempt at composing for an instrument that was not piano, was a result of my desire to follow up my 1998 win of the Anielewicz Competition with a meatier, more meaningful, more mature piece. I know that my experience writing this piece and hearing it realized began my long love affair with the flute, and especially with the flute’s low register. In retrospect, I’m particularly grateful to Sarah Baker Green for her patience with my experimentation in my flute writing, and for her willingness to record two of my compositions with me over my time in high school. That experience gave me a helpful head start in learning about what works when composing for instruments, and what doesn’t.
