Program Notes:

This piece is written in the “pandiatonic” style, an early twentieth-century compositional technique which places much more emphasis on the individual melodic lines than on the harmonic interactions between the lines.  This effectively abolishes the classical rules of voice leading, permitting the use of both extreme consonance and harsh dissonance all throughout the piece.  Each movement of the piece explores a different capability of the brass family: The first (Scherzo) is quick-moving and rhythmic, the second (Chorale — Recitative) is alternatively introspective and energetic, and the third (March) is a fanfare influenced by the funk-band brass sections of the sixties and seventies.
